Nicotine Pouches & Snus

“Snus” is a common search term in Switzerland, but it does not correctly describe every nicotine pouch. Traditional snus contains tobacco. Modern nicotine pouches generally use plant fibres, nicotine, flavourings and other declared ingredients. For VELO, Pablo, Siberia, edel, ELF and Vozol, always check the actual product type, nicotine amount and ingredient list.

A Guide to Snus and Nicotine Pouches

What is the difference between snus and nicotine pouches?

Snus is an oral tobacco product. Nicotine pouches are used in a similar position under the upper lip but contain no tobacco leaf. Terms such as “white snus” and “all white” are sometimes used commercially for tobacco-free pouches, although they do not always provide an exact product classification.

These label details are more useful than the front-of-pack name when comparing products:

  • Product type: Look for a clear declaration identifying snus, a tobacco product or a tobacco-free nicotine pouch.
  • Nicotine per pouch: mg/pouch states the quantity in one portion and is particularly useful for direct comparisons.
  • Nicotine per gram: mg/g describes concentration in the filling and is not the same as milligrams in one pouch.
  • Format and weight: Slim, mini and regular pouches vary in dimensions, fit and often total nicotine per portion.
  • Warnings: Nicotine is addictive; follow the age restriction, packaging warnings and safety information.

How to compare strength and pouch format

  • Prioritise mg per pouch: The nicotine quantity in one pouch is usually more useful than a brand-specific strength label.
  • Nicotine per pouch: mg/pouch states the quantity in one portion and is particularly useful for direct comparisons.
  • Nicotine per gram: mg/g describes concentration in the filling and is not the same as milligrams in one pouch.
  • Do not equate brand scales: Terms such as strong and extra strong are not standardised across manufacturers.
  • Store the can securely: Protect pouches from heat, direct sunlight, moisture and access by children.

Since 1 October 2024, tobacco and nicotine-containing products may not be supplied to people under 18 in Switzerland. Nicotine is highly addictive.
